I’ve started another off site blog, and yes i know! we all start these little blogs with grand ideas of where its going to go and how its going reap success but in reality 99% of us start blogs and give up a few weeks later adding yet more random crap to the internet. Well honestly this one wont be any different, its simply an area for me to collect and share my love for a certain style of art that inspires me personally.

I’m not too sure what kind of style this is, i guess mixed media. I like the contrast and depth this kind of work shows and how the artists create hidden stories and messages through their work.
I’d like to explore a similar style myself soon! soooo, watch this space

I recently started another random blog called Toto Toronto. I wanted to make a visual news feed about my thoughts and events of the day. To do this i came up with the idea of using a little character to express these thoughts, essentially to represent my subconscious; to bring to life the little voice in my head; allowing people to visually see the conflict, fears, fun and mysteries of each day. For the most part this is a fun outlet, but in other ways an insight into my life at the present time.

Lots of exciting work on the go at the moment, expect lots of updates soon, i’m also finishing up on a few tutorials and drawing demostrations i’d like to show.
This week Apple anounced the Ipad, a new tablet based ibook similar in design to the iphone but much larger. Sounds sweet to me, though hoping this one comes with a stylus and runs photoshop! However after reading about this i stubbled upon something even more cool; the keynote presentation of the first Apple Ipod back in 2001. Interesting to see how far the ipod has come in 10 years. Also really cool to think i have one of the original Ipods! a piece of history now. YAY! Ebay!

I’m currently working on a few personal projects. In the last few weeks i’ve managed to find a little down time from work and get out the old sketch book. To be honest for the last 10 years that i’ve been in the biz i’ve rarely picked up a pencil and sketched anything more than a few doodles now and then, so over the last few weeks i’ve commited myself to sketching each day. It’s funny because i think my sketching ability and the ideas i’m producing are far stronger than anything i did ten years ago, makes me think about all the creative information my brains been storing over the years and now like a flood gates opened up it’s all pouring out! and cant stop myself!! Given all the sketches i’ve been doing recently i was thinking about collecting them together and getting them printed into a one off comic format book. I’ll update with that later.
So until i get somewhere a little more concrete to hold my sketches, you can see them on the front page of my website, there’s a link to the bottom left. I also have a work in progress page for my sketches at: http://www.davidedwards.me/sketches.html very much work in progress at the moment, but coming along. I should also think about a seperate page on this blog for daily sketches, that could cool!

Happy new year!

The main focus of my professional career is matte painting, creating digital environments for film and TV. In my free time the creativity doesn’t stop when i clock off, i’m always coming up with new creative projects. I love to sit down and sketch new ideas, not just environments but anything and everything else, from cartoon robots to flesh eating aliens! Some of these ideas spark off new ideas and lead to bigger projects. These ideas really do warrant a seperate little world to play in, so with that in mind i’m in the process of building a new sub site dedicated to documenting the chaos of thoughts, squiggles and sketches. Click here: http://www.davidedwards.me/sketches failing that you can click the image to the right. Enjoy.
Speaking of clocks, i recently came across two websites that really captivated my imagination:
http://stephanehalleux.com and http://www.bennettrobotworks.com

These robot sculptures remind me of a small tin robot clock i currently own, which is one of my favorite posessions. I love the idea of finding discarded industrial parts and bringing them to life this way, giving them character. One day when i have enough free time i’d love to make my very own little robot clock!

So who is this David Edwards bloke anyway? Well that’s me; I’m a professional matte painter and concept artist working in film and TV. So what exactly is a matte painter? really doesn’t sound very exciting, one might imagine i paint garden fences or paint door matts; but no, a digital matte painter (or DMP) is a master illusionist of film and television, someone who conjures the impossible, someone who builds fantastic castles, destroys whole cities, realises the future with digital techniques. In a less glamorous sentence; a matte painter is a person who paints backgrounds for film and TV. environments that couldn’t possibly exist or be constructed by practical means.
I’ve worked on a number of feature films and television shows where matte paintings have been used to add fantastic worlds and breath taking environments; Avatar, Clash of the Titans and Where the Wild Things Are amongst a few of the films which i’ve worked on.
You can see a selection of professional and personal work at my website here: http://www.davidedwards.me
